OUR STORY

A bit of history…. Not unlike most of us, this girl has gone through a few dress changes. Founded by a Melbournian who had returned to home having spent a few lonely years in the US and determined that no newcomer to Melbourne would feel the loneliness she had felt, the Brighton Spinners was born in the 1980s. The name was based on the group’s main interest at the time namely, spinning yarns (be it wool or otherwise!).

In Oct 1996, the name was changed to Bayside International Women’s Association (a.k.a“Bayside”) to reflect the geographic location of most of the then members and club activities (Bayside is a suburb in Melbourne, SE of Melbourne CBD).

In 2019, as the catchment area of our members stands wider than Bayside and our activities are not limited to the Bayside suburb, it was time to change our name to reflect this wider scope. As of April 28, 2019, we are Melbourne Women’s International Club (MWIC). The club remains non-profit, non-commercial, non-political; open to English-speaking women who wish to explore Melbourne with like-minded others.
